Tips for Removing Stink Bugs

Bugs can be real menace to our homes. They make pollute the living area, make things really untidy. They can be absolutely disturbing at times. Those bugs which bite and such blood for your bodies are worse of all. They may cause you to lose your night’s sleep. Not only that, they hamper your reputation to a great extent. Imagine that some guests have walked in at your place and these bugs are roaming around everywhere in your house! It will create a mess of your reputation!

Stink bugs can be real source of embarrassment! During most times, they emerge from outside of the base boards, they come through the window, nestle around the exhaust fans; they also sometimes put up in the corners of lights attached to your ceilings. You will sometimes find these hiding behind your cupboard, at corners.

If these stink bugs have accumulated in your homes, probably the most dominant thought in your mind is how to get rid of these stink bugs. You have to seal all the cracks of the walls to prevent these from crawling out of your homes. A vacuum cleaner can be of real help when you are trying you do away with stink bugs. But be careful. The vacuum cleaners may take up the smell of these stink bugs and it might smell of them for a long time.

Using an insecticide may be an option for you. But it is not advisable that you always use insecticide to get rid of these stink bugs. These poisons may kill those bugs but these dead bugs will be eaten by carpet beetles and they may grow in numbers and destroy all your woolen clothes. The carpet beetles not only destroy your woolen clothes, they also destroy your dry goods which you have stored and other natural products which you use at home.

What ever pesticide you opt for, keep in mind that these have to be used with caution. Don’t go for the spray insecticides. They are not that effective. Although they kill bugs that are hidden in the crevices, there is a chance of these bugs growing back.

Be very careful with the pesticides. Handle them with utmost care. Keep them out of the reach of children. They can cause a lot of harm to the human body as well. Guard not only your children from these bottles, but also keep them out if the reach of your pets as well. Many pets have lost their lives due to swallowing these insecticides by mistake. Once the container is empty, dispose it off to some garbage can far away from the reach of your children and pets.

Aerosol-type pyrethrum foggers will sometimes kill the stink buds but once the room is aerated, these bugs will emerge soon after. So these are not a permanent solution. You can check out the stores for insecticides. But before you start using them try to get people’s reviews and choose the bug killer accordingly.

How to Select the Best Siding for You

As you approach a house one of the first things you see if the siding. This forms your first impression of a house. Is your siding worn or damaged? If so you could be sending the wrong message about your home. Home improvements such as siding require a good deal of research. Starting you research you will quickly realize that there are a number of different options available on the market. As siding professionals we install numerous different types of siding. Because of this we know that each siding choice is markedly different from each other. Three frequently used choices are vinyl siding, wood siding, and fiber cement siding. Each of these offer their own advantages and disadvantages.

The most frequently used siding option today is vinyl. Vinyl is frequently one the more inexpensive choices. For homeowners who are very price conscious this may serve as the first advantage of vinyl. As an additional benefit it has an projected 50 year lifetime. Vinyl siding offers a large variety of colors and textures for homeowners to choose from. The great number of choices vinyl provides a diverse number of looks to fit a range of preferences. Vinyl is a low maintenance product as it doesn’t require painting or staining.

On the downside severe weather can lead to damage on vinyl siding. And as siding installers we have witnessed hail damage to siding first hand. Damage of this kind can be difficult to repair on vinyl siding. Pairing with an insulated backing, is a needed extra step, as vinyl siding on it’s own does not have any insulating properties. This option is also not considered to be particularly environmentally friendly.

Wood siding, a biodegradable product, is considered a greener choice. In addition it is manufactured from a renewable resource! Cedar is one of the most popular choices for wood siding and when we install siding it is our material of choice. Cedar gives a beautiful natural look and can be stained a number of different earth tones. Since wood siding does provide some insulation by itself you may see a lower heating or cooling bill. Wood siding, or shakes, is a durable siding. It can, however, be easily repaired if damage does happen. It is easy to repair only damaged areas without residing large areas or your entire home.

Wood siding does require more maintenance. It typically needs staining or painting about every five years after. Because it is a natural product you must watch for mildew or moss. Untreated they can cause damage to your siding.

One of the most durable options is fiber cement siding. Typically less expensive then wood, it can be made to have the look of wood, stucco, or masonry. Contributing to its’ durability it is both long lasting and fire resistant. Fiber cement maintenance is normally low.

Fiber cement requires professional installation and sometimes needs to be painted. We always use factory trained installers for our siding projects using fiber cement. Your siding should be installed by qualified professionals who are trained to install fiber cement siding. Correctly installing a product is crucial to making sure it performs the best it can.

There may be additional options available to you, but these are the benefits and drawbacks of the three most commonly used choices. Refer to siding professionals in your area to guide you to the best siding choice to meet your specific needs and desired look. Your location may influence your choice in siding, for example with siding we may take in to account the effect of all four seasons of weather including snow and hail when making a recommendation to a client. In your area of the country there may be an extreme heat or other weather to consider. Clean new siding will send a positive message about the upkeep of your home.

How to Keep Your Basement Dry

Excess moisture in a home — particularly in the basement — can result in mold and mildew growth, as well as a number of health issues. Individuals living in musty, damp homes are prone to allergies, asthma, sinus congestion, and respiratory infections. What better way to keep your home and your family safe and healthy than with a completely dry basement? That’s where we can help!

Let’s examine a few effective ways to keep your basement dry — not for a few months — but for years and years to come. Visible moisture (and even water vapor) can enter the lower levels of a home through concrete, grout, or exposed dirt. And even if you can’t visibly see the moisture, that doesn’t mean it’s not there. If your basement walls have a white, peeling, powder-like substance on them, or if the pipes in your basement show signs of rust, there’s a very good chance that your basement is more humid and moist than you think.

Walls

A great way to protect your basement from excess water is to have a professional install a moisture barrier along the walls and floors of your basement. Wall coverings can be mechanically attached to the walls, acting as a vapor barrier and the most sturdy, protective wallpaper you’ve ever seen.

Flooring

In terms of flooring, many people mistakenly assume that if they hide the problem, in time, it will go away. Well, unfortunately that’s not the case when it comes to moisture in a basement. If you simply hide the problem by covering your basement floor with carpet or wood, it will trap the moisture underneath and lead to rot. And no one wants that!

Rather than make the problem even worse, consider basement floor matting. A plastic floor tile not only acts as a vapor barrier, it also eliminates the upward movement of water by depressurizing the space. Once you have the basement floor matting system in place, you can then safely cover the tiles with carpet or wood flooring to ensure a healthy, moisture-free, and comfortable living space.

Although organic materials such as carpeting and wood aren’t exactly recommended for the basement because of the mold growth and moisture damage possibilities-the above are ways to lessen the potential damage. Another great option is ordering flooring that looks like carpet or wood, but is in fact water damage resistant material.

Dehumidifier and Sump Pump

Another great way to keep your basement dry is with a dehumidifier. But don’t just use any dehumidifier. Install one that is cost- and energy-efficient, self-draining, and has a large collection tray.

Speaking of water removal, the next time your area receives a heavy rain, you may hear your sump pump draining excess water away from your home. But think to yourself — “When was the last time I checked to make sure my sump pump was working properly?” If you’re like most people, sump pump maintenance is quite low on your “To Do” list. If, however, keeping your basement dry and healthy is a top priority, maintain an efficient sump pump-simply ensure that your sump pump is clean, unclogged, and that alarm battery is working.

Having a trained professional locate areas of excess moisture and then install a basement waterproofing system is one of the best things you can do for your home. So don’t wait, take the necessary steps today and enjoy a healthy, usable basement for decades to come!

Common Types of Home Foundation

A foundation may be defined as the fulcrum on which an entire building structure rests. Therefore a building can be considered safe only if the foundation is strong and formidable.

Imperfect or defective foundation setting is the chief cause for undertaking foundation repairs. You may be need foundation repairs if cracks are seen in exterior walls or on foundation walls or interior walls or ceilings of your home. Foundation repairs will also become necessary if there is sunken interior concrete floors, bowed or buckled foundation walls.

Weather eventually takes its toll on many homes and the foundation suffers damages of differing magnitudes requiring different types of repairs. Earthquakes and floods cause serious foundation damages and timely repairs can save the home from splitting, caving in or crumbling to the ground.

Foundation repairs are obviously less expensive when the entire home has not fallen around the foundation. Some repairs may be too complicated for the average homeowner and should be left to professionals.

To those who may not be familiar, there are two common types of foundations – the slab-on-grade foundation and the Pier and Beam foundation. Slab-on-grade foundation means a concrete slab is poured below the structure to give it a strong base. The Pier and Beam foundation is said to be deeper and recommended for use in areas prone to snow and frost fall.

There are various methods of performing foundation repairs and cement, steel, stone or wood were used earlier. But time has shown that these methods are inadequate and quite often ineffective. Today, two of the most successful ways of foundation repairs are slab jacking and the piering method or hydraulic jacking.

Slab jacking involves adding grout beneath a slab or beam and care must be taken to ensure that the quantum of sand is perfect while adding grout. Piering method or hydraulic jacking entails driving steel posts through unstable soil and using hydraulic jacks to stabilize weakened concrete slabs. Piers are installed to support your home from further damage if your home foundation has some problems. The two piers commonly used for foundation repair are – friction piers and point bearing piers.

According to experts in foundation repairs, there are three advanced methods of foundation repair – concrete press piling, steel press piling and bellbottom piers. Concrete pressed piling entails drilling or pouring concrete piers. You will have to drill holes to a depth of 9-12 feet below the surface, and then fill the cavity with reinforcing steel and concrete. You will have to fill the concrete spacers and shims over the poured concrete

The steel pier method is rated as the best of the lot as the robust steel pier is drilled at pressures of up to 10,000 PSI and depths up to 60 feet. Normally, these types of foundation repair are graded as the quick solution and takes three days to complete. Bellbottom pier home foundation repair method entails drilling a hole in the ground, belling it at the bottom, pouring concrete into the hole, and then using that to lift up.

Once you suspect or detect home foundation damage, you must immediately contact a reputed home foundation repair contractor for your home foundation inspection and repairs. The home foundation repair contractors will assess the extent of foundation damage after initial inspection and will determine the method of repair and time period needed to carry out the repairs. They will provide you the repair estimate after taking into account several factors such as labor cost, type of material to be used, cost of materials, number of man days etc.

Tips To Find The Best Home Services

One thing everyone learns pretty quickly when they become a home-owner is that looking after your property is a major responsibility, for not only is your home a place to live but it is an investment too. Allowing it to run into general disrepair costs everyone more in the long-run than keeping it maintained properly year-by-year.

It’s easy to ignore the jobs that don’t seem to need doing. Keeping your roof in good order, making sure the exterior of your property is adequately prepared to take on the elements, ensuring that the internal structure of your home is solid against unseen enemies such as dry rot and damp, or keeping your property secure against possible crime.

The list is endless really, yet these jobs are sometimes put off in favour of saving money for that holiday or new car, or other leisure or luxury expenses when really putting money aside for the upkeep of your home should be everyone’s annual priority.

Part of the reason such jobs are put on the back-burner is because it is often regarded as too much of a hassle to go looking for someone you trust to do the job. It takes time and effort to sift through the list of various firms and individual tradesmen and women who are advertising their skills.

I know that as a home-owner I have been guilty of thinking like this for years. I just thought my home would look after itself. And when reluctantly I did have to find someone to fix the roof, I got stuck in a rut of trying to find the right firm that I ended up taking too long and the roof problem became worse very quickly. In fact it deteriorated over night during a storm and that is when I became very worried that I could be facing a bigger bill than if I had addressed the situation earlier.

The Best Tip To Finding A Home Services Expert…

…is take your time to find someone you trust.

This might be easier said than done – but it is well worth the effort being meticulous when making your consideration. After all there are dozens of firms out there all vying for business. How do you tell who is good and who isn’t? Just how good are their skills? Are they really the right person for the job?

Here are two things to consider when choosing someone to carry out those important home repairs or maintenance jobs:

1. Check their track record and qualifications so you can really be sure of their reputation. Some reputable firms have lots of references and testimonials to prove that they have done the work they said they have and to a high standard. They will also have lots of trade certificates for excellence and be registered with all sorts of trade guilds and trade federations to prove their authenticity and quality of service.

2. Ask around your friends and colleagues and family members for suggestions. Word of mouth of course is possibly the best recommendation going in any area of life. It is far more convincing if you know someone who can recommend a firm or individual to do the work because they have used them in the past. It is even possible they can show you the physical evidence of the work.

These are the two main things to consider when on the search for the best home service firm. But if you are fortunate like I was, you might be able to find a firm that specializes in numerous services.

If you can do this, then you will be saving an awful lot time and effort always looking for the right person for the right job.
